Iran film ‘Subdued’ tops award show in Tehran

‘Subdued’, by director Hamid Nematollah, has won several awards including best picture at the 11th Celebration of Iranian Cinema Critics and Screenwriters festival.

The drama brought home prizes from the Tehran event on Thursday, including the best director award for Nematollah, while Leila Hatami won the award for best actress for her role in the movie by the France-based company Dreamlabs.

Honorable mention went to Hatami’s co-star, Kurosh Tahami.

The film also brought Sohrab Purnazeri the best composer award, and the best screenwriter award went to Masumeh Bayat.

‘Subdued’ is an emotional journey about Mina who is recently divorced from her drug addict husband. With her mother deceased and estranged from her father, she leads an independent life.

After finding a job in a restaurant, she strikes up a friendship with its attentive manager. She begins to have feelings for him, which are eventually shared. However, when the manager begins to distance himself from her, a tumultuous emotional journey commences.

“I really care about critic’s views, because their views help make a film memorable,” Nematollah said after accepting his award at the Conference Hall of the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults.

Meanwhile, the event’s best actor award went to Hamed Behdad for his role in ‘Blockage’, directed by Mohsen Qarai.

Behdad dedicated his award to Iranian hero Mohsen Hojaji, who was recently martyred in the battle against Daesh in Syria.

The best supporting actress award was presented to Tannaz Tabatabai for her role in ‘The Villa Tenants’, by director Monir Qeidi.
